Mingalar Hsaung, the Marriage Ceremony

The moment when one's 'Mingalar Hsaung' in Myanmar or Marriage ceremony in English takes place in his or her auspicious and glorious time in life. May be, they are the most beauteous soul in this specific occasion.

Lawkaniti, the book of proverbs or compiled words of Buddhistic Industructions in ethics, says that monks and hermits are beautiful when they are lean; four-footed animals when they are fat; men when they are learned and women when they are married. (Lawkaniti 96)

No word is perfect without any addition of 'Mingalar' to it if it is concerned with 'Mingalar Pwe' or Auspicious Wedding Ceremony. For example, Mingalar Thatohtha (the Bridegroom or the auspicious groom) or Mingalar Thatohthami (the Bride or the auspicious bride) has the most vital role to play in 'Mingalar Hsaung', the marriage ceremony. That is the when both of them are physically and mentally beautiful.

Why do we call wedding ceremony Mingalar Hsaung? It is much in accord with doctrinal assessments. The sages said that every race on the earth has its own definition on Mingalar or Auspiciousness. In Myanmar, when we greet each other 'Mingalarbar', it means it is auspicious for you today. And you will have blessings for the rest of your life from that day onwards.

Thus, the word 'Mingalar' also indicates prosperity, good health and fertility. In marriage ceremonies in India, the cowry shells are invariably included in token payment made by the groom to the father of the bride. In our modern times, gold ring or diamond ring has to be paid or exchanged as a bride price. These are done as auspicious symbols.

Propitious words or speech made on the occasion of engagement or marriage is known as Mingalar Sagar( Auspicious Words). We offer food to monks to bless a marriage. This offering of food, in conformity with our tradition, is Mingalar Swam ( Auspicious Alms-food). There are other words like Miingalar Oo( honeymoon period), Mingalar Kyay (Auspicious Price given to the lads), etc.
