Exchanging greetings has been practiced among the people all over the world to mark some ways of being friendly with each other. Good morning, how are you? such a common expression in English culture is an interlude to a conversation or the word we use to show that we are pleased to see him or her. There are much more other ways to symbolize the pleasure or even an ecstasy in every culture.
We have, however, some different words for greetings in Myanmar that we say or do to express our friendliness. Some are the same as to what English people do. For example, the greetings like 'Ne' Kaun La' (how are you?), 'Ma Twe Da Kya Pyi Naw' (Long time no see!), 'Ah Sin Pyay Ye' La' ( how are you doing? ) make no different to English culture.
The unique way of welcoming people on arrival for the first time in your town, home, office, or country and showing that we are glad they have come is to say Mingalaba, (be auspicious!). Nowadays, welcoming someone in a very friendly way at any time or giving a very warm welcome on arrival is expressed by greeting ' Mingalaba '.
Before showing the appropriate link between 'Mingalaba' and 'wedding', we have to do some research on this word 'Mingalaba' has come into existence. There are varieties of words that have affiliation with the main prefix, mingala so as to show being auspicious.
In Buddhist scriptures, there is a name of Buddha that includes in twenty eight previous Buddha, 'Mingala Buddha'. The word is the name of the Buddha who practiced austerities for 8 months before attaining enlightment under the Cobra's saffron (Mesua Ferrea) tree and lived for ninety thousand years.
